Real Virtual Beauty

DOVE

Introducing diversity to online avatars
to improve gamer girls' self-esteem.

How come male video game characters get a wide range of body types and outfits to choose from, while female characters are all made to look like swimsuit models? Research has shown that these unrealistic beauty standards are negatively impacting girls’ self-esteem.

That's why Dove, together with Epic Games’ Unreal Engine and Women in Games, launched an initiative to improve representation of beauty online, starting by
creating more inclusive female avatars that game developers globally can access free of charge to include in their games.

The brand also launched the
Real Beauty in Games Training programme—an online course designed to educate developers, creators and artists about diversity in gaming.
